My Love Story with My Husband, in Which I Lost Him for 17 Years

Today, at 68, surrounded by family and friends, I celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary with Patrick. Our journey has been one of love, heartache, and resilience—a tale that’s both a dream and a nightmare.

Patrick and I first met in high school when he defended me from bullies. By eighteen, we were married, starting life with little more than hope and each other. But after joining the army, Patrick vanished during a mountain trip. I waited for years, raising our daughter alone, until I eventually met Tom, a kind man who helped me find happiness again. We built a family, and I began to heal.

Then, on the day of my wedding to Tom, a police car arrived. Out stepped Patrick, lost for years and now back, his memory recently returned. Life changed again as I chose to stand by him, through his physical and emotional recovery, until we rebuilt our love.

Today, I sit by Patrick’s side, grateful for the life we’ve shared—through loss, love, and everything in between. We held on, and in the end, that’s what love is all about.
